3-button suits: rarer than rocking horse ****?

Why is it that finding a 3-button suit is so difficult?

When I were a young lad, I’m sure 3-button suits were everywhere, even Marks & Spencers had a few knocking about and I don’t think it was that hard to find one in other high street shops. Ted Baker, TM Lewin or something like that would always have something in there for a young Mod.

Now, nothing. Ben Sherman doesn’t even do them. Ben Sherman, the brand most associated with Mod and sixties fashion (so far as such a thing goes) does not stock 3-button suits. Merc has closed its shop on Carnaby too, so that’s out. We can go to a tailor of course, and while many may prefer this from a purity point of view, it is expensive. The choices in the shops for the average Joe are limited.

Even surfing Pinterest recently, finding anyone wearing a 3-button is so rare that you might as well give up. Search for “3 button suit” and you simply get a whole series of pics of 3-piece suits instead. That’s waistcoats included. WASTE of time if you ask me.
So who will answer to the 3-button demand? We have of course, a whole series of prospects, from Adaptor (by far the best for price/quality balance), to Adam of London, to Brighton’s Jump The Gun and of course Atom Retro for a slightly chuck-out-esque, discount service (If I’ve missed any here, please let me know, but these are my top ones for now).

But what’s that, four places? And for the London lad I am, I have to order online most of the time. Don’t get me wrong I find online ordering great and I’ve never been dissatisfied with these guys’ products.

But aside from this, am I really right in thinking 3-button suits are now rarer than ever?

Unfortunately some of those you mentioned are poor quality with lots of polyester and fused interlinings. I think Adam and JTG are your best bet, or do what I do and get a two button converted to three. You probably have to try it on first to make sure you have room in the chest for the lapel to roll properly but I've done it on several of my suits with decent success.

This is interesting about converting 2s to 3s.

Do you do this yourself or do you get a tailor to do it and if so, how much do they charge?

100% agree, really like jump the gun and have got a fair bit from them but if I was buying a suit and spend the money I wanna try it on 1st.

Really enjoy the blog by the way

@ Darryl - cheers matey. I've had a lot of decent stuff from Suitsupply- I was lucky to be sent to New York on a regular basis so would visit their shop but they are branching out all over and recently opened near me in Tampa but I haven't been there yet. I think they have a shop in London but the best thing about them is free shipping both ways so if you can't get to a shop you can order a couple of sizes and send back the one that doesn't fit.
Most of their styles are two button but I've successfully converted them.

@ Editor - I wouldn't dare try this myself I have a good alterations tailor who does it. Unless you come across an old fashioned artisan who will do it by hand the tailor has to have a special machine for stitching around the button hole once cut. I think he charges me about $20 but I don't look at the bill too closely as I always get the vents closed on my jackets (heresy!!) and he might have to tweak the waist and sleeves so my bill is for a combination of several tasks usually.
