Probably mouthing off about not being allowed to smoke or something.
This is epic - never seen the man in a Harrington jacket before, yet here he is, mid-sentence, thumb-in-pocket, looking swag.
Probably mouthing off about not being allowed to smoke or something.

Coming across this online, it immediately caught my eye.
It’s the very definition of what I consider Mod - distinctive, not too attention-seeking and with great details. I especially like the fact that it’s a cross between a smart suit jacket and a kind of pea-coat style jacket, making it basically unique. Gives it that retro vibe that wouldn’t look out of place in a Michael Caine film. Plus it’s quite neutrally coloured so it’d go with quite a few things in an outfit. Annoyingly, Mendoza only seem to have these "Jones Jackets" available in XXL. God knows why - unless Long John Baldry’s popping in I think it’s unlikely you’re going to find any Mods this one will fit! Would have been a steal at £100! To all you guys (and gals) heading down to the sea this weekend, keep it together, dress swag, no dodgy dancing and definitely no fighting anyone in leather! I know it's daft but I still quite like this ad. Vintage vespa showroom today. Enjoy, sirs!
They call themselves restrospectivescooters.com, so go check 'em out. Difficult to claim these guys were any kind of Mods (not that Americans couldn't be), but then I'd also say it's difficult to claim they don't look completely swag in their military-style get up. Usually I'd probably go for something a bit shorter length myself, but I suppose a long military coat would look quite elegant in an Italian, mafia-like way. Sources claim these coats are supposed to be based on the blue Unionist uniform from the American Civil War. As any fashionista would know, the Confederates wore similar coats in slightly mroe stylish "Rebel Grey", a fabric produced by the Crombie company no less. Weller giving us a demo of the Mac, Style Council stylee.
This pic was rather recklessly labelled as "Weller - trench". Amateurs can't tell the difference. Usually LG sticks to the Manc Mod Look, which I perceive to be a bit scruffier than the 59 Mod Look, but it's no less cool.
However it DOES make it unusual to see him in a rollneck. Consider all of yourselves lucky. This is a rare moment. One of the slightly cooler sixties bands of the period course, but you don't want to know where they all ended up. The video is very grainy, but I'm liking the drummer's military-style jacket in this one. I know it's unfashionable to say so, but Oasis did do a few decent songs after the year 2000 and I reckon this is one of them. It's a bit trippy (like the rest of the album) and, thinking about it, you can sense the different musical direction NG was going to take when the band broke up not long after. It doesn't really sound like an Oasis song at all. Apart from the fact that the kid in the middle looks to be about 11 years old and the guy on the left looks like a kind of French newspaper boy (wearing a kind of weird waistcoat), the clothes in this pic are swag in a particularly retro Mod way.
Maybe it's the cord or the hats, but it's definitely a look to aspire to. Patterned trousers too. Weller and Talbot pull of the Parisien look.
Use of Macs was a big thing for the Style Council - Weller would punish any parka wearers with death, I'm told by reliable sources. Following the general theme for the week - the Kinks are back. LIke I mentioned before I'm not the hugest of fans of the Kinks' music in general, but they have some decent numbers and in this video they look absolutely sick. That voice tho! Also, the girls screaming - utterly bizarre. Maybe someone can fill me in on this one - in @MichaelRees84 ‘s battle of the bands on twitter, the Kinks recently beat the Small Faces by popular vote.
Obviously this doesn’t mean they’re more Mod (if there is such a thing), but it’s something I was thinking about - they weren’t exactly as uptight and buttoned up as the Small Faces were … you might even say they kept up a slightly hippy-esque style. Yet they are spoken of in the same breath. They were of the period and dressed a bit similar, but I can't say I've ever seen them on scooter. They seem somehow a bit more eccentric to be into the Mod scene. Of course this is my opinion - perhaps you've got some insider details. Anyway here’s a few of the more Moddy pics that I can take inspo from. Yes folks if you’re as obsessed with scooters as some people I know in this place (the internet) then perhaps you need to take it that bit further and sleep with them.
Or maybe your kids’d like a fancy cover to bring them in the right direction. Either way you can grab one on ebay for cheap today if you’re quick. |
