Taking original style into the 21st century

Don't be a sucker - iron your shirt

Only criticism here is the crumpled shirt. How much effort does it take to iron?

Otherwise, great seersucker jacket and knitted tie combo. Plus, cheeky tie bar peeking out between the lapels further down. Swag.

My other impression might be that these lapels are a touch long and wide for the Ivy Look but still. You get what you can nowadays.

Norman Hilton blazer - from Keith Scotland

I love this old ad - especially the description of the colour - "sooty shades of navy, moss or burgundy are accented by antiqued brass  buttons cast especially for us." They really knew how to describe things back then. Plus the guy in the pic just looks ultra-smooth with his, cigarette and shades, his JFK haircut and the car in the background. I do think they could have come up with a better description for the material than "Hopsack" though - that doesn't exactly sound glamorous.

Also - imagine that - a $75 jacket!

That's about £53 in British and accounting for inflation, £1,055 in today's money!

No wonder this cat looks so smug.

Ice Cream Weller

This is one of my favourite tracks. Not because it's necessarily the best song, but because of the stuff Weller is wearing.

Might do a Swipe The Style on this soon.

Bold Plaid Sportscoats!

Love these old ads. Usually they look so Ivy League-stylish.

This guy probably not so much - he looks a bit dorky but his jacket's doing well. And what a price!

Keeping up with the Joneses

29/8/2017

Coming across this online, it immediately caught my eye.

It’s the very definition of what I consider Mod - distinctive, not too attention-seeking and with great details. I especially like the fact that it’s a cross between a smart suit jacket and a kind of pea-coat style jacket, making it basically unique. Gives it that retro vibe that wouldn’t look out of place in a Michael Caine film. Plus it’s quite neutrally coloured so it’d go with quite a few things in an outfit.

Annoyingly, Mendoza only seem to have these "Jones Jackets" available in XXL. God knows why - unless Long John Baldry’s popping in I think it’s unlikely you’re going to find any Mods this one will fit!

Would have been a steal at £100!

I’m not sure if this is still on sale as a Baracuta Harrington (get the title now?). The link is a bit of a dead end (I left it in anyway) and it’s quite hard to find any mention on their website, as much of a pleasure as that is to look through.

Never mind! Let’s revel in the pic for now

Show some Merc(y)

Yes, going big on Merc this week.

This jacket is quite a swish one for the Spring/Summer 2017 season.

Kind of a cross between a bomber and blouson (or Harrington) but in navy with a nice stripe in white and burgundy. The inclusion of burgundy (as opposed to red or orange) is classic Merc.

I’d love to know what their design rules are. Burgundy always seems to be in there and I admire the way Merc seems so hard-line on using it as a brand colour - I think it really works. I’ve had a bit of a so-so relationship with Merc over the years. Peak annoyance was when the Rolling Stones bought Merc’s Carnaby Street shop and used it to flog their irrelevant tour rubbish.

I suppose on reflection it wasn’t their fault at all, but I like to tell the story of how I went in and looked around the shop for about half an hour without realising it wasn’t Merc anymore. And I blame the Rolling Stones.

Mod / MA2 Flight Jackets

24/3/2017

I have been looking for a while for any kind of photo that showed me a classic Mod band wearing one of these flight jackets. I suspected they were purely the preserve of Skins (not that it stopped me wearing them), but turns out I have finally stumbled across what I’m looking for!

Took me a while to confirm as some of the pics are a bit grainy. Conclusively though, here is Eric Burdon himself wearing the kit. Of course we can debate whether The Animals were Mods 'til kingdom come, but you have to admit they look pretty swag here.

Dogtooth check

21/3/2017

I always prefer a slightly darker shade of dogtooth check myself as I think the straight black and white pattern can be quite bright! Perhaps a grey and black, a navy and sky blue or something.

But this guy pulls off the classic nicely. Good choice of neutral colours for the shirt and tie to offset.

Shame about the two-button jacket!

“Not quite a boating blazer”

3/1/2017

I like the way Jump The Gun have described their jackets. This one they refer to as “Not quite a boating blazer”, which is a good label here - often the blazers you find on Atom Retro or on the pegs in Merc (when they had a shop on Carnaby Street) are very loud, decked out in very bright colours, but this one is much more subtle. Much cooler I think too.

Another quite cool thing about it is the reverse peak lapel and flap pocket on the chest. These are both again subtle and distinctive, epitomising the attention to detail that we’ve come to expect from JTG.

Check Jack

Bought my own special treat of one of these earlier which has arrived and is particularly strong. Going to be posting about it soon...

For the time being here is some guy and although his jacket has slightly wider lapels and too few buttons for my tastes, he looks pretty sharp.
