Are you Mod?!

Taking original style into the 21st century

Something all fashionistas should watch out for

Check this out ladies and gents.

Great little flick  - a few famous faces, some extremely quoteable lines (esp. Robert Elms) and of course the snappiest threads you've ever seen.

Still not clear precisely what it is we're supposed to see coming out in 2018 - is it a documentary? Is it a short docu-drama? Is it just a series of interviews set to music?

Who knows. Anyway this was supposed to be released this year so it must be any day now...

How Pellicano convinced me they’re cool

I’ve slowly come around the Pellicano’s way of thinking.

I used to be really upset about the fact that they were really expensive for quite tame shirts.

But the more I’ve thought about it, the more they make sense.

Not only do their shirts look great - especially when they go all in like with their recent paisley experiment.

But they also have photos of Italian cafes in a Roman Square (yes I think I’ve actually been to it).

Great swish logo.

Beautiful site.

Everything looks very smooth and very silky-stylish.

On the paisley shirt, even the pattern looked smooth.

They also make about ten shirts in every round of sales. Okay, maybe not ten but usually they are limited editions of about 75.

Now don’t get me wrong there’s nothing particularly fascinating about this - their shirts are, on the face of it, quite normal.

But their write-ups, their photos and their sales copy are beautiful.

It’s old skool somehow.

It reminds me of watching the first episode of Mad Men ages ago

(the only episode I ever watched)

And the bit that stays with me is the scene where the main guy is in some biz meeting with a client, asking him what he wants.

Obviously he wants his product (which is cigarettes) to stand out.

All the guy says is “How do you make your tobacco?”

And the guy says “It’s toasted, we…”

And Mad Men guy puts his hand up and stops him there.

When they get to the poster stage, the only thing on the poster (other than the photo of the cigarette) is “It’s Toasted!”

Literally those two words added a whole new depth to what was basically a normal cigarette.

Now I’m not saying Pellicano are selling normal shirts, probably far from it.

But the “It’s Toasted!” bit of their product is amazing.

Keeping up with the Joneses

29/8/2017

Coming across this online, it immediately caught my eye.

It’s the very definition of what I consider Mod - distinctive, not too attention-seeking and with great details. I especially like the fact that it’s a cross between a smart suit jacket and a kind of pea-coat style jacket, making it basically unique. Gives it that retro vibe that wouldn’t look out of place in a Michael Caine film. Plus it’s quite neutrally coloured so it’d go with quite a few things in an outfit.

Annoyingly, Mendoza only seem to have these "Jones Jackets" available in XXL. God knows why - unless Long John Baldry’s popping in I think it’s unlikely you’re going to find any Mods this one will fit!

Would have been a steal at £100!

Pretty Rude

Just a quick post today - Pretty Green have a selection of dazzling new shirts out, presumably to celebrate the new releases of rKid’s new songs.

These are beaut - looking to be of a heavy knit style similar to a Gabicci or something from Brick Lane’s Mendoza (which if you haven’t visited, do. It’s great for this kind of loud, rude-boy style knit) and also like something you’d see Steve Marriott wearing on the front of some 60s magazine.

So if you fancy something a bit fresher than a Fred Perry, click on through.

Ben Sherman takes another bite of the apple

This is an interesting new pattern from Ben Sherman - it’s a micro dot pattern of small apples on a short sleeved summer shirt. I think it’s actually a bit gimmicky, but I guess each to his own taste and they are at least trying something new.

Click the pics for a closer look on the BS site.

Mod at the touch of a button

7/7/2017

Brought to my attention by a Twitter fan over the weekend. Basically Cradock seems to think that the whole world is going to Hell in a hand cart and it’s all thanks to technology.

“Nothing is real inside the new world.”
“Love at the touch of a button.”
“Digital showers over London.”
“The past is nothing but a pixel.”

It’s actually a really good song and it has a great rhythm. Of course, from my post earlier in the week about Spotify (the music app for your phone), you all know how I feel about the “new world”. The oldies among you will groan and moan, but to be a Mod in the 21st Century is epic. It's possible for a small group of enthusiasts to market their threads across the world at minimal price. Without the internet I wouldn’t have access to half the great clothes I know are out there!

I suppose I could get off my arse and go and look for them... but who has time for that eh?

I’ve got a blog to write.

The revolution will be well-dressed

3/7/2017

What with the general rise of radical politics across the globe’s politics (looking at Trump, Putin, Corbyn, maybe a bit of Theresa when she starts whingeing about the internet), the aspiring man-about-town needs to start looking the part for the coming takeover.

I’m only kidding. But I do love the military jacket look (I draw the line at carrying an AK47) and I’m pretty sure it’s one of the main things that got me into Mod in the first place. Even though the military jacket doesn’t carry the same recognition in the movement as the tailored suit, you all must have seen a bit of (early) Marc Bolan and old David Bowie, maybe the Who (yes them again), the Creation and even the Jam dipping into the military style now and again, so I reckon I’m pretty safe in claiming this is something most Mods have dabbled in...

[Click the pics to take a closer look.]

That uptight, far-too-well-dressed look, with the stand-up collar, epaulets and chest buttons, couldn’t be anything else as far as I’m concerned.

But, here’s the thing. Until now, you had to go rummaging around in the local vintage shop or army surplus store to get anything. And we all know where that leads. An old, baggy RAF jacket with a dodgy collar and some weird belt thing at the back. And the colour is appalling. So actually, it is quite difficult usually to pull off the military jacket look.

Pretty Green however have done all the work for us right here. Rejoice.

(Quick note though, the sizing is pretty strict - my one is very tight and, for those fans of the buttoned-up look, those buttons are pretty tight too. But, once you sort that out, pair with a paisley shirt and you’re laughing all the way to the revolution.)

Get knitted

Fred Perry are known for their classic polo shirts with the sleeve piping, but this one’s a bit different. Not only is it a strong navy colour minus the collar stripes (unusual), but it’s also pure cotton with the look of a John Smedley and probably that silky smooth feel to match. To complete the retro look, the sleeve piping is slightly wider.

It’s a bit pricey at £70, but given that brand new ones from the FP shop are £55, it could be worth it. And it’s wool remember.

Spanish suede

You all know I love a Chelsea boot. Especially one in suede. Now Beatnik shoes have added a few to their collection in the lushest colours imaginable. When I say lush I don’t mean the fruity combos I talked about in previous posts. I am talking sensible Mod lush, a lush that prides detail and style over bold colours, suaveness and smoothness over attention-grabbing loudness, subtlety over spectacle. Basically, a series of different shades of brown.

Check them out - they are a little over the average in terms of price (about £177 including P&P and currency exchange), but then they are treated with a special anti-moisture material, so you do the maths.

I also really like the blurbs that go with them - even if the English translations don’t always make sense.

DSJ from JTG

This is JTG’s original cord jacket or "Denim-Style Jacket" (DSJ), their answer to the denim. It’s definitely original and it looks swag, especially in navy.

No danger of double denim here...

Adapt to the circumstances

Adaptor are minting out the sports tops like no-one’s business. Superb range of colours and I really like the way they decided to combine the stripe designs. Previously it was the case that you could buy one with a striped neck or one with a stripe down the chest. Now they are combined into one great look that couldn’t be more pop-arty.

They are also 3 for £45 so get in there before summer ends.

I’m not sure if this is still on sale as a Baracuta Harrington (get the title now?). The link is a bit of a dead end (I left it in anyway) and it’s quite hard to find any mention on their website, as much of a pleasure as that is to look through.

Never mind! Let’s revel in the pic for now

Mad Dogs

Patterned trousers (also known in personal circles as “Jam trousers” after an Eddie Izzard sketch, or even “Ruperts” as a Northern acquaintance affectionately liked to refer to them) are one of fashion’s great mysteries. They have a volatile history at the forefront of almost every phase of 20th Century youth history, believe it or not. Starting with the Small Faces, they seem to have been an almost permanent feature. Even the Who, manufactured artfully as they were by Pete Meaden, performed a lot in Ruperts in their early period. One of my favourite record covers from The Specials has Terry Hall and Jerry Dammers both wearing quite powerful tartan trousers. They’ve also been referred to as a punk staple, worn by the likes of The Clash, The Damned and of course The Sex Pistols. Miles Kane even appeared to be dressed in a pair of subtle grey dogtooth on stage in Birmingham, but these claims are unconfirmed and probably owe more to dodgy eyesight than to style renaissance. We live in hope.

Anyway, I have recently taken delivery of a pair of light brown dogtooth trousers from Madcap England, one of those zany companies that supplies stuff on Atom Retro. And they are, frankly, some of the best I’ve worn.

I think they must be a winter season, as the material is quite heavy, but they fit well and appear to be of excellent quality. The outer shell is polywool, a blend of wool and polyester which nevertheless looks great, especially given the price.

However, what I most like about these boys are their style. Madcap are generally known for their slightly outrageous pattern choices (think striped blazers, whacky Trip Op Art shirts, etc) and in many ways this is their unique selling point. But these trousers are more subtle, darker and far less attention-grabbing. They look sick without making themselves the centrepiece. So much so that I could even get away with wearing them day-to-day if I wanted to - they fit with so many of my other outfits.

“Jam trousers” or “Ruperts” make a great addition to any Mod wardrobe. But if you’re looking for a strongly versatile pair of dogtooths - go for these ones.

Great post here by Pellicano on the origins of the Breton.

I also very much liked the phrase "Rebel without a pause", which I see as one step along from the original.

Gimme the Gabicci

8/4/2017

Having received my very first Gabicci top for my birthday the other day (thanks to my brother), I am now more fascinated than ever by their range. I'm treating this post as a quick stream of consciousness, but the polo shirt below is a good example of the kind of unusual and niche patterned polos that Gabicci does.

Weirdly enough though their best stuff rarely seems to turn up on their actual site. Those gems such as that below seem to surface on Atom Retro (where my bro got my one) or other places such as, in this instance, Stuarts.

If you're looking for a Fred Perry alternative, check them out.
