The Last Shadow Puppets recently released their new album and the jury is still out, but I am, in general, pretty impressed.
It’s pretty short - a fair few of the songs are under 4 minutes and the whole thing only lasts just over half an hour. It leans back away from their first album (which sounded to me like a pitch for the new James Bond soundtrack) and instead opts for a much more fairground sound (a description I’ve pinched from elsewhere on the internet but I thought described it perfectly). A bit sing-song, a bit jingly, but with a slightly dark undertone.
You might be astonished to hear a 27-year-old say that, but it’s true! Despite the click-and-download culture, the idea of a LP or album still has its fans.
Despite all of this, we are no closer to answering the question that always rears its head in my mind: are they mod?
If we’re being honest, probably not.
But then neither were the Who and they did good music, wore pretty cool togs and influenced a lot of stuff later on (including the Creation who were mods).
So it is legitimately a grey area, but as usual, Mod is in the detail.
So they might be a bit Mod sometimes and that’s fine.
But for them it is not a way of life. They do not live clean under difficult circumstances. They dress up for the stage and that’s that.
