Are you Mod?!

Taking original style into the 21st century

Listen to the albums

Couple of great tunes here, the first being very much an old favourite of mine. The second one is a little bit of a rip-off version of the Beatles' Taxman, but the first is definitely an underrated classic from the Jam era.

I've noticed that there's quite a few of these. It's almost like Weller was reluctant to release songs from the albums as singles. Actually, I'm pretty sure Town Called Malice was the only Number One Single that was released that was also on an album. If you look at some of their 2nd  and 3rd place singles, they are also often non-album tracks, ones like The Eton Rifles, When You're Young and Strange Town.

Obviously, it's not a hard and fast rule, but it does show the singles don't always tell the whole band story!

Not sure what point you're making here. Several singles were not on albums but of four number ones only two - Going Underground and Beat Surrender - were not on an album. Start was on Sound Affects and Town Called Malice was on The Gift.

Also Eton Rifles (got to number 3 or 4 IIRC?) was on Setting Sons.

Non album singles were somewhat rare back then but problies put out to keep the attention on the band during periods of touring or writing and recording. The Jam seemed to have a long career at the time but looking back it was over in the blink of an eye. They went from touring to recording to promoting and back touring again (along with frequent TV appearances and features in Sounds, Melody Maker, NME, Smash Hits, The Face, etc) and as such were never far from the public eye.

You're right - thanks for those corrections.

The point I was making here was that Running On The Spot is one of my favourites from The Gift and from the band more generally, and actually a song Weller has played every time I've seen him recently too. (so perhaps it's one his favourites?.

Yet the song is hugely underrated publicly. My point was, that to fully appreciate the band's work it makes sense to listen to the albums, rather than just their Greatest Hits.
